In contrast, I listened to Pimsleur I German (oral only, without access to whatever printed material it may come with) and right off the start I got stumped by the German speaker saying the German word for "excuse me" ("Entschuldigung"). Even though that was a number of months ago without any subsequent review or use, those words and sentence patterns are still lodged pretty firmly up here (pointing to my head at this point).
This worked extremely well for me, but only because he spelled out all the new words (or for the few that he did not, I used (english to German) to get the spelling. I listened to all of Disc 1 of Michel Thomas (a purely oral approach). Believe it or not Pimsluer has helped me learn how to spell in the target language too. When I blind shadow sometimes I'll catch a few words here and there, but the more I do it the more I understand. How do you hope to look up words you're not familiar with in conversation or on the radio without a transcript? I completely agree with you that it's hard I myself had to train my ears, but this in my opinion is the best way to practice. Okay, but I'm pretty well sure that shadowzoid does.
